Alcohol detox programs can help an alcoholic make a very difficult first step toward committing fully to a lifestyle without a dependence on alcohol. It has been proven by numerous studies that the more solid an addict’s support network of family, friends, medical workers, etc. the more likely he or she will be to recover fully.
Because the admission of a problem is the most difficult, family, friends and treatment center staff are there to act as moral guidance throughout the alcohol rehab and detox program. The length of time treatment lasts varies, depending on how severe the addiction is. Also, medical or psychological issues are taken into account. There are over 22 million people in the United States that have a drug abuse or substance abuse problem. This amounts to a little less than 10% of the entire nation, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration for the year 2006.
Alcohol abuse is also a significant problem in America, because there are nearly 14 million people who meet the commonly accepted criteria for alcohol use disorders., as reported by Alcohol Health & Research World. In fact, more than 100,000 U.S. deaths have been caused by excessive alcohol consumption every year. Some of the causes of death are alcohol poisoning, cirrhosis of the liver, stroke or drunk driving-related accidents.
In 2005, over 17,000 auto accident deaths were partially caused by alcohol – diving drunk decreases reaction time and increases aggressiveness.
Traffic crashes are responsible for the most deaths in people from ages 6-33, and approximately 45% of these are alcohol related. 6.5 times the amount of youth die from alcohol due to poisoning or accidents thatn do others from other drugs, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and there are 61% of adults in the United States who drink alcohol on a regular basis.
