Some General Statistics from Substance Abuse Resources

Substance abuse is today a global problem. Alcohol abuse has always existed in the world, but in the last century, the world has seen an alarming increase in the number of people ruining their lives through drug addiction.

Both of these combined are taking millions of lives on a global scale and causing losses of billions of dollars each month in the global economy. People with these addictions are not fit to work. They are prone to be absent from work often and that hampers productivity.Let us concretize the actual extent of the damage substance abuse does to the world with some facts and figures. The following are some substance abuse resources according to the World Health Organization (WHO):-

 Currently, there are approximately 76.3 million people all over the world who are actively into alcohol abuse.
 Currently, there are at least 15.3 million people all over the world who are actively into drug abuse. The most common drugs that are abused include heroin and cocaine. Recently, methamphetamine or meth, has joined this league as a lifestyle drug in a big way.
 The commonest ways of consuming drugs are by snorting and by injecting directly into the body. At least 136 countries around the world maintain that there are people living in them who are injecting lethal drugs into their bodies for recreation.
 Injecting drugs into the body leads to a very grave consequence, which is of HIV infection. At least 93 countries in the world have declared that their inhabitants have been infected with the AIDS virus because of the unsafe drug injecting syringes.
