Medications used for Heroin Abuse and Heroin Addiction Treatment in Louisiana

May 29, 2008

Heroin is a very different kind of drug, in that the addiction produced by it is quite strong and difficult to remove by mere detox. In fact, the heroin detox is characterized by strong withdrawal symptoms and without providing the right kind of medication to keep that at bay, heroin addiction treatment cannot be even thought on. In the heroin addiction treatment program in Louisiana, there are two kinds of medications that are very commonly employed. These are methadone and buprenorphine.

Methadone mainly acts by changing over the heroin addiction to a methadone addiction. Since methadone is an opioid itself, this is possible. But then the methadone amount needs to be slowly reduced and then fully eliminated. In this way the person comes out of the heroin addiction. Methadone is the oldest drug used in heroin addiction treatment in Louisiana and is still very commonly used. But it needs to be used under strict medication because of its addictive nature. Also, it can produce severe side effects.

Buprenorphine, on the other hand, does not have as many side effects, but it is also an opioid that can form a habit. But because of its reduced nature of action, buprenorphine is provided as an outpatient treatment if required. There are two forms of buprenorphine that are used in heroin rehab in Louisiana. These are Subutex and Suboxone. In the latter, buprenorphine is mixed with naloxone in order to reduce its addictive nature. Both these drugs are approved by the FDA and are used quite prominently.
