The addiction treatment program in Alabama has always been all encompassing. It has always included all aspects that directly and indirectly pertain to a person’s addiction problem. The treatment itself touches all these aspects. One of the most poignant aspects here is codependency within the family, an issue that the treatment program in Alabama has always striven to achieve.
Codependency happens when the family unwittingly becomes a part of the addiction problem of the person. Alabama has a closely knit family culture, with most people living in families than alone. And these families are protective of their members too. When a person is in an addiction, the family may actually try to mask that addiction problem in front of society. They may lie and shield the person’s actions.
But this actually makes the issue more serious. A family that refuses to show the addiction of a family member is as bad as a family that provides no treatment to such a member at all. Because the family puts a veil on everything that the person does, it is effectively taking him or her away from the treatment. They are pushing the person deeper into the cocoon of denial.
This is a burning problem on the scene of substance abuse in Alabama. Now with the help of various statewide awareness programs, the government is trying to drive this point home. It is also including the families of the patients in the overall treatment program in a significant manner in order to teach them how they must effectively cope with their family member’s substance abuse problem.
