Many teens are very loyal to their friends. Lots of friends you’ve had since literally forever and you’ve been through a lot together. You’ll stick together – thick and thin. But now you’ve got a friend in trouble and you really don’t know what to do.

It puts you in a sticky situation because you’d like to help, but you just aren’t sure what to do. Well if you think your friend has a problem with drugs and may be someone with a drug abuse problem, there are some things you can do.It is important that you show your friend that you care about them. A friend with a problem is more likely to get help when they feel that people around them care and love them. The more supported your friend feels, the more likely they are to reach out and get support for their problems.

While you may have noticed your friend’s drug abuse problem, the sad truth is that many teens have an even more serious problem. Often their useage is more serious. They may use drugs by themselves frequently. They may even lie about the quantity or frequency that they abuse drugs. Sometimes they may tell you they are going somewhere to do something – like home to do homework or to the mall or something, when in reality they are just going to go get high. So while you have noticed a problem with your friend’s drug abuse – the actual problem may be more serious.

Talk to your friend about how it is affecting their life. Chances are they are not doing the things that they used to do. They probably aren’t trying out for the drama group or on the swim team anymore. They may not have as many friends as they used to. Or maybe the group of friends they have does drugs frequently. They need to understand how drug addiction affects their life.

Encourage them to reach out and seek help. Sometimes the answer for teens is to enter a drug rehabilitation program. In a drug rehabilitation program, they will learn how to change their addiction into more positive habits and turn their life around. You can be a supportive friend and help them make good changes that can truly change their life!
