Hawaii Alcohol Abuse Centers and Programs

Drug and alcohol abuse can result in serious and harmful changes to a person’s mind and body because of a buildup of harmful chemicals in the brain and the resulting dependency. When an addict decides to recover, the most important step is to first remove all the harmful toxins through a process called detox. Hawaii has several detox programs of different types, such as outpatient detox and rapid detox for people who may have a very strong addiction. In recent times, some breakthroughs in medicine have occurred, which allows the detox process to happen with much less discomfort to the addict than is normally thought.

There are residential programs as well offered in Hawaii, with twenty-four hour support in both medical needs and emergency counseling. The reason for this is that withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs can often have mental symptoms just as severe as physical. This varies widely from person to person, but generally, the physical symptoms of withdrawal are night sweats, tremors, nausea and occasionally hallucinations. At one time, these were things all addicts undergoing detox and withdrawal had to deal with, but with rapid detox programs in Hawaii, the process is much smoother.

Because there are mental symptoms as well, a staff of psychologists will be on call at Hawaii drug rehab and detox centers, and can ease the patient through the process, helping them on the way toward living a better, more drug-free life and to become more productive in society. For the most part, inpatient programs are still considered to be the most successful although most patients seem to prefer going outpatient, often because their schedule won’t allow for extended absences.

If the addict happens to be addicted to opiates, rapid detox is an option there as well – in fact, opiate detox is what rapid detox programs are most used for. The addict is placed under anasthesia as the opiate’s chemicals are forcefully withdrawn from the body. Withdrawal symptoms are immediate, but the patient doesn’t know, due to being asleep at the time. The anasthesia is required, otherwise the discomfort would likely be too much to bear and the program would fail. Generally, this whole process takes about six hours, where before it took nearly a week. Some other treatments exist, such as a sauna bath which involves sweating the toxins out of the body, or acupuncture. Herbal detox is also available, via drinking prescribed dosages of herbal tea and other supplements.

Each program in Hawaii is designed to accomplish a different task, so for this reason it’s important to do the research beforehand. Procedures that work for one type of program or addiction may not work in another, and the overall requirement of any drug rehab program is that it suits the addict as a person, that it’s tailored to their personality. The proper program is essential to assure the most likelihood of full recovery. There is no completely perfect program that will heal all addictions, but there is an individualized perfect one in Hawaii.
